The Children
Below are a series of profiles of the children from Safe Haven Orphanage. If you would like to know more about any particular child from the orphanage, please get in touch using our contact page.
The children range in age from as little as 1 month old, to over 20 years old. The majority of the children reside in Ban Tha Song Yang (Mae Tawo), where the local school is so overcrowded and under-funded that it finishes at grade nine. To finish high school and begin college, the children must come down to Mae Sot to finish their studies.
The children learn responsibility from a young age, they are expected to do homework and chores before being able to play with their brothers and sisters. They eat, work, study and play together, this infuses them with the sense of family that they desperately need. Most of our kids were orphaned by the Military government currently in power in Burma [see Background on Burma].
To steer the kids away from lives controlled by anger and revenge we rely on the kids to foster a sense of love and commitment within themselves. With anger in their hearts they would be doomed to the same fate as many of their brethren, hopelessly lost in a war they cannot win. Only through education and integration can we expect change for them and The Karen people as a whole.

Johnny

Johnny was found abandoned lying on a banana leaf under a tree in Burma. He was brought to the orphanage by some villagers in 2008.

Ruby

Ruby was born at Mae Sot hospital. Her parents abandoned her at the hospital. No one would take her except Tasanee. Now with much love and care she has grown into a healthy little girl.

Wa Kim

Wa Kim’s father left him and his mother when Non kim was born. He has grown up with his maternal grandmother, Tasanee. His mother works as a nurse and helps support the orphanage’s expenses.

Wan Pen

Wan Pen’s father left her mother before she was born. Five years later her mother remarried and the new husband sent her brother to live at a temple and Wan Pen was brought to the orphanage. Wan Pen arrived at the orphanage on April 2005.

Ta Ri Ni’s father suffers from epilepsy and her mother suffers from heart disease and they cannot take care of their children. They brought their children to the orphanage for Tasanee to raise. Ta Ri Ni arrived at the orphanage on April 2005.

Pi Chai

Pi Chai is Tarenee’s brother and he really wanted to go to school. He came with his sister to the orphanage in April 2005.

Ma Li Ni

Ma Li Ni lost her father when she was 2 years old. When her mother was unable to take care of her she got passed around from house to house until ending up at the orphanage. She arrived with her brother Pah Saa in May 2005. She was born severely cross-eyed, and thanks to donations we have received she has undergone corrective surgery and can now see perfectly!

Pah Saa lost his father when he was 4 years old. His mother is mentally ill and cannot take care of her children. Instead they were brought to Tasanee. Pah Saa arrived at the orphanage in May 2005.

Ratree is the younger sister of Naw pet and Naw da. She is the youngest of five children and the only girl. Her parents brought her to the orphanage in the hopes that she could receive an education.

Wi Chai lost his father when he was 9 years old. Wi Chai has one sister and one brother. His mother got remarried and her new husband no longer wanted the children so the children were brought to the orphanage. Wi Chai arrived at the orphanage in May 2006.

Tu Lha

Tu Lha is Saw moo and Panita’s brother. When his mother passed away he was only 4 years old. Tu Lha arrived at the orphanage in May 2003.

Naw Ko Deh and her younger brother Pah Hoo were constantly beaten. Then one day they were abandoned after witnessing their step-father beat their mother to death. She and her brother were brought to the orphanage in 2008.
