Orphanage in Thailand: Safe Haven Orphanage

Yes it’s that time of year again when all the children head back to school. All the children at Safe Haven Orphanage attend the local public Thai school in nearby Mae Tawo. The school year in Thailand is divided into two semesters, and for primary and secondary schools runs from the middle of May to March the following year.

Bangkok Graduation trip

Recently a number of the children went to Bangkok to attend Chom’s graduation ceremony. And while in Bangkok we also managed to fit in many other activities.

A visit to Jomtien Beach was the first exciting activity for the kids as none of them had ever seen the sea before, and as you can see from the pictures below, they took to it like ducks to water. This was then followed by a visit to Nong Nooch Garden and Resort with the rest of the day filled with eating and shopping.

The next day was Chom’s graduation ceremony at Ramkhamhaeng University which was a very proud moment for all. That night everyone had their fill at a celebratory BBQ followed by a very long and late drive back to Mae Tawo.

Clothing Donation

On the 15th January, the team from Yehpattana Tayeh Company, Bangkok, came to the orphanage bringing with them a huge amount of brand new clothing, material and food items for the children. As you can see from the photos, the truck was too large to drive into the orphanage so had to be unloaded from the front gate!

The children then had a great time that evening going clothes ‘shopping’ and fitting themselves out in the latest fashions.

Tasanee’s Birthday

On December 22, the children celebrated ‘Big Mums’ birthday. It was also combined with a Christmas party so much food and drink was enjoyed by everyone and the sudden injection of sugar ensured that it was a very late night for the kids!

The Safe Haven Orphanage website, even though it may look the same, has been completely rebuilt using WordPress. This is going to allow for some exciting new features such as integration with our Facebook group, a new blog and better photo galleries including video feeds so please stay tuned.

New arrivals

Numbers are constantly fluctuating, but it is estimated that 4,000 Karen have now crossed into Thailand in the last week after fighting between Burmese government troops and KNLA soldiers.

Children score well in english competition

On July 7th Saturday every school in the Tak province had a technical competition at the school in Mae Sot. The Safe Haven children went to Ban Tha Song Yang school because the teacher had chosen some of them to participate in an English technical competition. They did very well. Chang Chai’s group got first, and Nikhom’s group got Second. Kgaw Eh paw got second for mathematics. Their teachers and I were very happy that our children are doing so well. I decided when new volunteers come to the orphanage I will have them continue to practice speaking and reading English and the children will continue to improve!

Sick Children

After we had a party at the orphanage I came back to Mae Sot at the orphanage office. At night time around 10 o”clock the phone rang and I picked up the phone and they told me that one of my children was in the hospital. It was Doo who is 20 years old. She is studying nursing training in Nakhounsawan four hours away. She has a kidney infection and gastritis and then the next day I went to Nakhounsawan to see her and check her and I decided if she has to stay in the hospital for many days I will move her to Mae Sot. When I went to meet with the doctor he told me that she will be ok and the next day she left the hospital and then I told Doo that I can not stay, because I have a friends who want to visit the orphanage so I had to go back to Mae Sot that night. I arrived in Mae Sot around 9.30 pm and went to meet my friend, Tom to visit the orphanage for the next day. And on the next day on the 2nd of June my friends and I went to the orphanage. When we arrive to the orphanage I saw three of the kids had malaria. They have been to the clinic and are taking medicine and hopefully everyone will be healthy soon!
